Designing a SOC Automation Pipeline with n8n

Connect detection events, threat intelligence and an analyst approval step to reduce repetitive security work.

Start with a small workflow

Choose one noisy but well-understood alert type. Make the automation gather context and recommend an action before enabling any automatic response.

Suggested workflow

  1. Receive an alert from your SIEM or detection system.
  2. Normalize the observables and remove secrets.
  3. Enrich indicators through trusted threat intelligence sources.
  4. Summarize evidence and confidence, including uncertainty.
  5. Require analyst approval before destructive actions.
  6. Save the decision, evidence and outcome for audit.

Common failure modes

Automation can amplify bad data. Set timeouts on external services, prevent repeated loops, and plan for unavailable enrichment sources. Never allow an LLM summary to become the only basis for a high-impact action.

Measure the outcome

Track elapsed investigation time, false positives, analyst corrections and the percentage of actions that were approved. Use these measurements to prioritize the next improvements.
